It all started with a vision and a concept drawing. In this case, it was clear we needed to bring the Bloom Brew logo to life with a balanced combination of 3-dimensional letters and fruit with carved letters and accent details to make this sign pop. This sign was a perfect candidate for high-density urethane (HDU). We choose 15-lb Duna Corafoam® HDU for this sign. It’s perfect for stacking, gluing, and shaping. It holds crisp clean lines and can be intricately detailed due to it’s density. This particular HDU is lightweight making it suitable for hanging and mounting on walls. HDU is an artist’s dream to work with and when done right, it’s a perfect substrate for outdoor dimensional signs.

After the guys at Bloom Brew signed off on the design we were ready to start production. Digital cut files were created for routing. The HDU comes in a 4′ x 8′ x .1″ sheet so each piece needed to be cut separately for assembly. A CNC router is used to precisely cut each individual piece of the sign. Pockets were cut for the letters “BLOOM BREW” to sit recessed in the sign. Details like the wheat grass and “Hand Crafted Beer” were also carved in to the HDU by router. A Dremel sander was used to clean up the edges.

Once all the pieces are cut the rest of the building process is done by hand. Each piece of the sign is glued and screwed in to place like the foam balls used to build the inner support structure of the fruit. Every piece of the sign is blind mounted so no fasteners are seen.

The entire sign is hand painted with a high quality latex enamel paint. It’s important to take your time covering with multiple coats ensuring each layer has a chance to dry. If you go to quick or too thick, paint will separate from the HDU.
The next step is creating the 3D fruit pieces. A 2-part epoxy sculpting clay is used which permanently attaches to the substrate. When cured the sculpting clay is hard and rigid like stone yet lightweight.
Sculpting and painting is complete. A clear coat finish is applied to preserve the paint. The sign is completed and ready for delivery.
The sign has been delivered. Another happy customer!
